Defense Chief Emphasizes Strength in Peace and Dialogue

Gyeryong: Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back on Monday emphasized that peace and dialogue should be grounded in "overwhelming power," urging the military to sustain a robust defense posture. Ahn's remarks came during a policy briefing of the military branches, underscoring the need for a state of readiness across all military sectors.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Ahn highlighted the role of a strong military as a stabilizing force during the policy briefing at the military headquarters in Gyeryong, located about 145 kilometers south of Seoul. He stressed the importance of unity among military branches and the Marine Corps to ensure a well-prepared military for the future, advocating for reforms with a determined approach.

Ahn also encouraged the Navy to diligently advance the country's nuclear-powered submarine project, describing it as a critical component of national strategic initiatives. During the briefing, he was updated on the progress of developing "500,000 drone warriors," with plans to acquire 11,265 drones predominantly made with domestic materials. This initiative aims to better equip conscripts for contemporary warfare and represents the first such update since a reshuffle of senior military personnel.

In a related development, the Marine Corps is set to collaborate with the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) to expedite the transfer of operational control of two Marine divisions from the Army. This shift aligns with President Lee Jae Myung's commitment to reforming the military's three-pronged structure-comprising the Army, Navy, and Air Force-to enhance the Marine Corps' autonomy.

The Marine Corps plans to seek legislative amendments to formalize these changes, including the establishment of an independent operations command. It also intends to deploy key assets such as K2 battle tanks, KAAV amphibious assault vehicles, and marine attack helicopters to units specializing in amphibious operations.
