Changwon: Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back pledged to "swiftly" advance South Korea's initiative to construct nuclear-powered submarines during his visit to the Navy's submarine unit. This announcement came as the nation prepares to retire its first naval submarine, the ROKS Jang Bogo, next week.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Ahn expressed that the legacy of the ROKS Jang Bogo, a 1,200-ton submarine that has served for 34 years, will continue through South Korea's efforts to develop nuclear-powered submarines. The defense ministry highlighted Ahn's commitment to expedite the project by establishing a permanent interagency task force next year, aiming to conclude negotiations with the United States within two years.

During his visit, Ahn also assessed the operations of the Navy's UDT/SEAL special forces and the Sea Salvage and Rescue Unit, ensuring their preparedness and operational efficiency. Additionally, he evaluated the military readiness of the 1st Marine Division and the Marine Corps' education and training group, emphasizing the importance of maintaining robust defense capabilities.
