Gwacheon: The chief of South Korea's arms procurement agency has met with Peru's congressional delegation to explore avenues for bolstering bilateral arms cooperation, officials announced on Friday. Lee Yong-cheol, the minister of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, held discussions with Peruvian lawmakers Victor Flores and Silvia Monteza at the agency's headquarters in Gwacheon, situated south of Seoul, on Thursday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Peru stands as South Korea's largest export destination for defense equipment in Central and South America. A significant milestone was achieved in 2024 when South Korean defense firms and Peru's Army and Navy established a long-term strategic partnership deal. This agreement allows Korean companies to attain the status of preferred negotiators in joint defense projects for a period extending up to 15 years.

Significantly, South Korea entered into a framework agreement last year to export K2 tanks and K808 armored vehicles to Peru, with an agreement to finalize the contract within this year. If executed, it would represent Seoul's largest arms equipment export to the region.
