Seoul: South Korea's customs agency announced a significant seizure of 2.1 tons of drugs as a result of a recent collaborative global operation with partners in the Asia-Pacific region. The Korea Customs Service, in partnership with the Regional Intelligence Liaison Office for Asia and the Pacific under the World Customs Organization, executed the operation under the campaign slogan, "For a Drug-Free World."

According to Yonhap News Agency, the operation spanned two months from May to June and involved collaboration with 18 other countries. During this period, customs authorities confiscated 2.1 tons of drugs across 785 cases. This marked a substantial increase from the previous year's operation, which saw the seizure of 663 kilograms of illicit drugs in 235 cases.

The breakdown of the seized substances included 633.4 kilograms of methamphetamine, 368.8 kilograms of cannabis, and 57.1 kilograms of cocaine. Lee Jong-wook, commissioner of the Korea Customs Service, emphasized the importance of combating cross-border drug trafficking, noting that most illicit drugs in South Korea are smuggled from overseas.

The agency also expressed its intention to boost cooperation with international organizations, such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the International Criminal Police Organization, to further combat drug-related crimes globally.
