Seoul: An appellate court has announced plans to hold an additional mediation session in the ongoing divorce settlement case involving SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and his former wife, Roh Soh-yeong. This decision was made during a mediation session at the Seoul High Court, which lasted approximately one hour, where the court listened to both parties' positions before deciding to schedule another session soon.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Supreme Court had previously sent the case back for review last year. It overturned the couple's asset division ruling while confirming their divorce and Chey's obligation to provide alimony to Roh, who is the daughter of the late former President Roh Tae-woo. During the latest session, Roh refrained from speaking to reporters upon her arrival at the court, whereas Chey was not present, and only his legal representatives attended.
In a significant development last October, the top court nullified the appellate court's directive for Chey to pay approximately 1.38 trillion won (US$922 million) to Roh as part of the asset division. The court rejected the appeals court's acceptance of an alleged 30 billion-won slush fund supposedly funneled to Chey's father by the former president, deeming the fund to have been illegal. Despite these changes, the top court upheld the divorce and Chey's alimony payment of 2 billion won.
The case has its origins in 2015 when Chairman Chey publicly announced his intention to divorce, revealing an extramarital affair and a child from that relationship. He proceeded to file for a divorce settlement two years later. Chey and Roh, who were married in 1988, share three children.
