Seoul: E-commerce giant Coupang Inc. reported a net loss in the second quarter, a shift from the previous year's profit, due to substantial fines associated with a major data breach. The U.S.-listed company disclosed a net loss of 865 billion won (US$570 million) for the quarter ending in June, compared to a net profit of 43.5 billion won during the same period last year.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the data breach, which came to light in November 2025, affected over 37 million customers, drawing significant public backlash. In response to the breach and unauthorized collection of users' online activity, the Personal Information Protection Commission levied a record fine of 624.7 billion won against Coupang in June.
Despite these challenges, Coupang's Product Commerce segment, the company's primary online shopping business, saw a 1 percent increase in sales, reaching $7.42 billion in the second quarter. During an earnings call, Coupang CFO Gaurav Anand explained that while the fines are under judicial review and an appeal is planned, the expenses were recorded for the quarter.
Coupang founder and Chairman Bom Kim noted that the majority of customers returned and resumed their previous spending levels following the data breach incident. Excluding those who have not returned, customer spending increased by 16 percent year-on-year in the second quarter. Based on these trends, Coupang projects third-quarter sales growth of 8-9 percent, despite the Chuseok holiday occurring earlier than last year.
The Developing Offerings segment, which includes operations in Taiwan and Coupang Eats, saw a 20 percent increase in revenue to $1.43 billion. Meanwhile, the number of active Product Commerce customers grew by 3 percent year-on-year to 24.7 million.
Additionally, Coupang repurchased $459 million worth of shares in the second quarter after initiating a $1 billion stock buyback program the previous quarter. The company also reported an operating loss of 835 billion won, reversing from an operating profit of 209.3 billion won a year earlier, although overall sales rose by 4 percent to 13.3 trillion won from 11.97 trillion won the previous year.
