Coupang Data Breach Exposes 33.7 Million Customer Accounts

Seoul: U.S.-listed e-commerce giant Coupang Inc. revealed that personal information from 33.7 million customer accounts was exposed, significantly higher than the initially estimated 4,500 accounts.

According to Yonhap News Agency, this updated figure implies that nearly all Coupang customers could have had their personal information, including names, phone numbers, email addresses, and delivery addresses, compromised. However, the company assured that payment information, credit card numbers, and login credentials were not accessed.

Coupang stated in a press release that unauthorized access to delivery-related personal information occurred via overseas servers starting June 24. The company has since blocked the access route and strengthened internal monitoring. Additionally, Coupang is conducting a joint investigation with security experts and is cooperating with law enforcement and regulatory authorities.

The company issued an apology for the incident and advised customers to be vigilant about phone calls, text messages, or other communications impersonating the company. Given that Coupang's Product Commerce division, which includes its delivery service, had 24.7 million active users in the third quarter, the scale of the leak suggests that nearly the entire user base might have been affected.

On November 20, Coupang initially reported a data leak involving approximately 4,500 customers, stating then that there was no evidence of unauthorized access to payment information or intrusion into its systems or internal network. On the same day, police launched an investigation following a complaint from Coupang to determine the exact route of the data breach.
