The statement from the caucus highlighted the critical role South Korea plays as a "key and indispensable" ally to the U.S. According to Yonhap News Agency, Representatives Ami Bera (D-CA), Marilyn Strickland (D-WA), Joe Wilson (R-SC), and Mike Kelly (R-PA) issued the statement following Lee's election victory. The election took place after the ousting of former President Yoon Suk Yeol in April, due to his brief imposition of martial law in December. The co-chairs expressed their "sincere congratulations" to President Lee and extended their best wishes to his administration as they prepare to navigate the challenges facing the Korean Peninsula and beyond. They reiterated their commitment to defending and strengthening the U.S.-Korea alliance, particularl y in light of this year marking the 75th anniversary of the Korean War's outbreak. The statement underscored the pivotal role of the U.S.-South Korea relationship in U.S. foreign policy within the Indo-Pacific region. The co-chairs emphasized the shared values and unshakeable bond between the two nations, asserting their intention to ensure peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and in the surrounding region. They also expressed their eagerness to collaborate with President Lee and his administration during this critical period for the alliance. Additionally, they acknowledged the significant contributions of the approximately two million Korean Americans in the United States, who play a vital role in maintaining the robust bilateral relationship. The Korea Caucus consists of U.S. lawmakers dedicated to supporting and fostering the U.S.-South Korea relationship. The co-chair role previously held by the late Gerald Connolly has now been assumed by Marilyn Strickland.
