Seoul: Comedian Park Na-rae announced she will suspend all broadcasting activities amid escalating allegations of abuse against her former managers and claims of receiving illegal medical treatment. Park, a prominent TV personality on MBC's hit variety show "I Live Alone," shared on social media her decision to halt broadcasting activities until the situation is resolved, expressing concern over causing trouble to her program and colleagues.
According to Yonhap News Agency, MBC promptly issued a statement announcing the suspension of Park's regular appearance on the show, citing the seriousness of the case and her intent to pause broadcasting. The broadcaster also canceled the production of the upcoming travel reality show "Nado Sinna" ("I Am Excited Too"), in which Park was set to be one of four hosts for a January premiere, due to the controversy surrounding her. Despite having already filmed portions of the show, MBC decided to cancel it because of its heavy reliance on Park.
The production team of tvN's weekend variety show "Amazing Saturday" also decided to part ways with Park, stating their respect for her decision. Park's choice to step back comes after two former managers accused her of verbal abuse, physical assaults, and making them perform tasks unrelated to her official schedules.
On Saturday, Park's agency filed a countercomplaint with the police, alleging the two former managers sought money through false claims and blackmail. Park's side is also preparing a separate complaint against at least one ex-manager for suspected embezzlement and denied allegations that she misused company funds for personal expenses.
The comedian stated she met with the former managers and resolved "misunderstandings and mistrust" but acknowledged her responsibility for the situation and is reflecting deeply. The controversy expanded with new claims that Park received unauthorized injections and proxy prescriptions from an unlicensed practitioner known as "injection aunt."
Lim Hyun-taek, former chair of the Korea Medical Association, filed a complaint against the unlicensed practitioner on Monday, naming Park as a suspected accomplice. The controversy has overshadowed Park's career, which saw her rise as one of South Korea's most successful female comedians.
Park debuted in 2006 and became a household name in the entertainment industry, winning the Grand Prize at the 2019 MBC Entertainment Awards and the Best Female Variety Performer award at the 2020 Baeksang Arts Awards.
