City Bus Unions Threaten Nationwide Strike on May 28

Seoul: Unionized intracity bus workers in Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Gyeonggi Province, and 18 other regions across the country have announced a potential nationwide strike at the end of this month if ongoing wage negotiations with management fail to yield a satisfactory agreement.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the bus workers, who are all part of the Korean Automobile and Transport Workers' Federation, declared their intention to launch a collective walkout on May 28. This decision was made following a meeting of their representatives at the federation's headquarters on Thursday morning.

Seo Jong-soo, chairman of the federation, stated, "Intracity bus unions in the 22 regions agreed to simultaneously apply for labor dispute mediation next Monday and do their best to negotiate during the 15-day mediation period." He further added, "If no agreement is reached, a nationwide strike will begin on May 28."

In the capital city of Seoul, the negotiations between the intracity bus union and management have been ongoing, with discussions centered around a proposed wage increase. However, these talks have not yet resulted in an agreement. In response, the union initiated a work-to-rule protest on April 30, which they resumed on Wednesday, indicating their dissatisfaction with the current progress.
