Seoul: China's Tang Dynasty initiated another series of attacks against Pyongyang, the capital of the Goguryeo kingdom, in 661. This kingdom, founded in 37 B.C., included territories that are now part of North Korea and northeastern China.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Tang forces led by Su Dingfang laid siege to Goguryeo's capital city during the winter of 661. While earlier attempts to conquer Goguryeo were thwarted at the border, Tang forces managed to reach the capital with aid from the Silla kingdom. Silla, located in the southeast of the Korean Peninsula, provided Tang with both food and strategic support. This period in Korean history is known as the Three Kingdoms era, with Goguryeo in the north, Silla in the southeast, and Baekje in the southwest.
This alliance between Silla and the Tang Dynasty played a crucial role in the downfall of Goguryeo, which ultimately led to the unification of the Korean Peninsula under Silla's rule. Goguryeo's cultural legacy, however, was preserved and passed on to the Goryeo Kingdom, which succeeded Silla and shared its name with the ancient kingdom.
In addition to these historical events, other significant moments in Korean history include the signing of a trade agreement between the Joseon Dynasty and Denmark in 1903, and the notable achievements of swimmer Cho Oh-ryun in 1980. Furthermore, South Korea entered the space age in 1992 with the launch of its first satellite, Wooribyeol I, from French Guiana. More recently, in 2014, South Korea proposed high-level talks with North Korea to address issues stemming from the Korean War, and in 2017, Lee Kun-hee of Samsung Group resigned from his role as an International Olympic Committee member. In 2019, the U.S. and South Korea commenced a 10-day computer-based military drill called "Combined Command Post Training."
