China’s Export Ban on Dual-Use Items to Japan Raises Concerns for South Korean Trade

Seoul: China's recent ban on the export of dual-use items with military applications to Japan is poised to affect South Korea's imports and industries, as stated by the industry ministry on Thursday. In response, the ministry has pledged to implement measures to avert a potential supply shortage of the impacted items.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources convened a supply chain inspection meeting on Thursday with relevant ministries and industrial associations to evaluate the impact of China's latest decision. The meeting aimed to scrutinize the potential ramifications of the ban on South Korea's industrial landscape and explore ways to mitigate adverse effects.

On Tuesday, China's Ministry of Commerce declared an immediate prohibition on exporting all dual-use items with possible military applications to Japan, citing national security concerns as the primary reason. Dual-use items include goods, software, and technologies designed for legitimate civilian use but can be repurposed for military purposes.

The ministry emphasized that while China's decision was not specifically targeted at South Korea, it is anticipated to have widespread repercussions across domestic industries due to the interconnected nature of the supply chains among China, Japan, and South Korea. The South Korean government is committed to maintaining open communication with private industries to prevent the new export restrictions from causing a shortage of industrial materials within the country.

Vice Industry Minister Moon Shin-hak assured in a press release, "We will thoroughly manage the supply and demand of such items, while keeping all possibilities open to ensure there are no disruptions to production activities of our industries and companies." This statement underscores the ministry's proactive approach in addressing potential challenges arising from China's export ban.
