Seoul: The Doosan Bears have secured the services of their free agent pitcher, Choi Won-joon, with a new four-year contract. The deal, announced Friday, ensures Choi will remain with the team, potentially earning up to 3.8 billion won (US$2.6 million) over the contract period. The 30-year-old pitcher received a signing bonus of 1.8 billion won, with his total salary set at 1.6 billion won and an opportunity to earn an additional 400 million won through incentives.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Choi has been a steadfast presence for the Bears since making his Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) debut with the team in 2018. Over his career, Choi has made 238 appearances, including 140 starts and 98 relief outings, achieving a record of 44-45 with 13 holds and a save. He has maintained a 4.28 ERA across 834 2/3 innings.

Choi, who has consistently pitched over 100 innings each season since 2020, had a mixed 2025 season. He made 16 starts and appeared in 31 games from the bullpen, resulting in a 4-7 record with a 4.71 ERA over 107 innings. Despite entering free agency for the first time, Choi expressed no desire to leave the Bears. He emphasized his commitment to the team and his determination to meet their expectations both on and off the field.

The Bears highlighted Choi's significance to the franchise, recognizing him as a key player who continues to perform at a competitive level. They praised his ability to contribute significantly both on the field and in the clubhouse.

This signing is part of the Bears' strategy to retain their talent, as they have re-signed all three of their free agents this year. Previously, they secured outfielder Jo Soo-haeng and pitcher Lee Young-ha. Additionally, the Bears strengthened their roster by signing former Kia Tigers shortstop Park Chan-ho to a four-year contract on Nov. 18, marking the first free agent move of the offseason.
