Hur Young-in, chairman of bakery giant SPC Group, appeared before prosecutors on Monday for questioning over allegations that he forced bakers at an affiliated firm to quit their labor union. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office grilled Hur, 75, as a suspect in the afternoon about a possible violation of labor union and relations laws, according to judicial officials. The questioning came about one year and five months after the Ministry of Labor and Employment asked the prosecution to indict some officials at PB Partners, an SPC company, on suspicion of forcing bakers at Paris Baguette, another SPC affiliate, to withdraw their membership in the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), a hard-line labor umbrella group, between 2019 and 2022. Prosecutors suspect there was intervention at the SPC Group level in the process of giving disadvantages in promotions to the KCTU members. Earlier this month, SPC Group's CEO Hwang Jae-bok was arrested and indicted on charges of violating the labor laws and prosecutors have obtained a statement from him to the effect that there was an instruction from Hur.
