Aronda a big loss to the country- Museveni (Daily Monitor (Uganda))
President Yoweri Museveni has paid tribute to the former Chief of Defense Forces and Minister for internal affairs Gen Aronda Nyakairima.
Addressing mourners at Aronda’s home in Busiga a Kampala suburb on Monday, Mr Museveni said he received news about Gen Aronda’s death while in India.
“I received news of Gen. Aronda’s death the other day when I arrived in India my immediate thinking was maybe it was an accident. I didn’t know he had any medical problem. Because when we came from the bush, many died of AIDS but Aronda was disciplined, he survived. He died on a plane coming from South Korea. We are busy finding cause of his death, but that will not bring him back, it is very sad.
Aronda together with few others helped us start afresh and rebuilt the country. It is a big loss. He has made his contribution. It was an untimely death at 56yrs. He helped with the ID Project, it was stuck but he moved it. From the people here, it shows who Aronda was.” Mr Museveni said.
Earlier, Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi also visited the fallen general’s home and commiserated with family.
Journalists who had converged at the late general’s home in Buziga after reports that President Yoweri Museveni was expected there to commiserate with the family were asked to leave.
Security officers at the late’s home said his family had asked for privacy from the media to mourn their loved one.
Mr Ofwono Opondo, the executive director of Uganda Media Centre, said a flight attendant discovered Aronda had died when he could not wake him up for breakfast. The cause of the unexpected death is yet to be established.
Aronda was returning from the South Korean capital, Seoul, where he led a government team to explore acquisition of equipment for the national Identity card project. In his entourage were Ms Judith Obitre-Gama, the national Identification and Registration Authority executive director, the authority’s board chairman John Kasenene and the Information Technology director Clet Turiyo.
All were on the same flight, according to officials. The General’s body has reportedly been taken for embalming at a police hospital in Dubai.
