APEC Summit in Gyeongju Tests South Korean Diplomatic Strategy Amid Global Power Shifts

Gyeongju: President Lee Jae Myung's diplomatic agenda is unfolding this week as he navigates complex international relations on a global stage. The journey commenced with his participation in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Malaysia, leading up to South Korea's hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province.

According to Yonhap News Agency, this diplomatic week is marked by significant events, including state visits and bilateral summits with US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The upcoming Trump-Xi meeting is anticipated to be a crucial moment, influencing the global trade dynamics and power structures. The Gyeongju summit serves as a critical test of President Lee's pragmatic diplomacy.

A key challenge for Lee involves securing the Korea-US partnership's future, following months of negotiations focused on a strategic trade package. Discussions revolve around Seoul's proposed $350 billion investment in the US, linked to US tariff reductions on South Korean automobiles. Despite progress, unresolved issues persist regarding cash ratios and fund distribution timelines.

Lee aims to demonstrate effective negotiation for a mutually beneficial outcome, modernizing the security alliance while ensuring Korea's economic growth. A hastily concluded agreement could have long-term economic repercussions.

The summit also highlights the US-China relationship. The Trump-Xi meeting is seen as pivotal in determining the global trade war's trajectory and broader geopolitical tensions.

Lee's meeting with Xi, marking the Chinese leader's first visit to South Korea in 11 years, is an opportunity for diplomatic reset. Lee seeks to normalize strained bilateral relations while addressing issues such as China's actions in the West Sea.

As APEC chair, South Korea plays a vital role in bridging the US and China, promoting a declaration on free trade and multilateralism against protectionism.

Beyond the G2 dynamics, Lee's ASEAN engagement in Malaysia aims to enhance cooperation on threats like online scams and strengthen Southeast Asian partnerships. Coordination is also planned for a meeting with Japan's new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, to build regional trust.

Overall, Lee's strategy focuses on a strong US-Korea alliance while maintaining relations with Beijing. The Gyeongju APEC summit is a test of Lee's leadership during a turbulent period, with the potential to turn diplomatic challenges into opportunities for national prosperity and global leadership.
