Gyeongju: The APEC summit held in South Korea's historic city of Gyeongju has concluded with significant diplomatic strides and economic agreements, highlighting the potential of multilateral cooperation in a fragmented global landscape.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the summit, which was themed "Building a Sustainable Tomorrow," successfully positioned South Korea as a key player in fostering open markets and multilateral dialogue. The event culminated with the adoption of the "Gyeongju Declaration" by all 21 APEC member economies, marking a substantial diplomatic achievement. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung officially passed the APEC chairship to Chinese President Xi Jinping, reinforcing the continuity of cooperative leadership.
A pivotal outcome of the summit was the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which resulted in a ceasefire in their ongoing tariff confrontation. This pragmatic pause is expected to stabilize markets and encourage global investment. Additionally, South Korea secured a framework tariff deal with the US, involving a $350 billion investment pledge, which includes a $200 billion cash investment portion capped at $20 billion annually.
The summit also saw progress in security cooperation, as the US approved South Korea's pursuit of nuclear-powered submarine construction, reflecting growing trust within the alliance. Diplomatic relations between South Korea and Japan were also reinforced, as President Lee and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi committed to future-oriented cooperation while addressing historical issues through a two-track approach.
Furthermore, APEC members, who collectively represent over 61.4 percent of global GDP and nearly half of world trade, endorsed South Korea's push for the first APEC AI initiative and a demographic framework. This consensus follows a previous failure to achieve such unity in 2018, emphasizing the renewed sense of collective purpose achieved in Gyeongju.
Global investment commitments announced during the summit amounted to approximately $9 billion, with companies like NVIDIA and AWS pledging significant contributions to South Korea's innovation ecosystem. NVIDIA's commitment to supply 260,000 high-performance GPUs is set to accelerate South Korea's ambition to become a leading AI power.
The summit also highlighted South Korea's cultural influence, as world leaders toured Gyeongju's cultural sites, showcasing the country's rich heritage and strategic importance. The event's success underscores the need for continued diplomatic engagement and domestic policy follow-through to ensure the durability of its outcomes and the advancement of South Korea's national interests.
