Seoul: Civic and labor groups organized nationwide candlelight rallies on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of President Yoon Suk Yeol following his contentious martial law declaration. The Korean Federation of Trade Unions and People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy spearheaded the protests, drawing an estimated 2,000 participants to Gwanghwamun Square in downtown Seoul. According to Yonhap News Agency, the demonstrators condemned President Yoon for his brief yet controversial attempt to impose emergency martial law, urging his immediate resignation. The rallies were not limited to Seoul; they echoed throughout the country, with significant turnouts in various regions. In Gwangju, located in the southwest, approximately 1,000 individuals assembled for a candlelight rally that commenced at 7 p.m. Organizers noted that similar protests were planned in Suncheon, Yeosu, and other cities within South Jeolla Province. Meanwhile, in Daegu and Pohang, civic and labor activists held morning news conferen ces, also demanding President Yoon's resignation, and planned further rallies in the afternoon, accusing the president of instigating a rebellion involving the military and police. The protest momentum continued in Busan, where civic activists committed to daily anti-Yoon rallies until early next week, beginning Wednesday afternoon. Ulsan was also set to host a rally at 6 p.m. the same day. Candlelight rallies were scheduled in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, and on Jeju Island at 7 p.m., underscoring the widespread discontent with the president's actions.
