Alpine skier Kang Young-seo wins bronze in women’s slalom

SAPPORO, Japan-- Alpine skier Kang Young-seo won the bronze medal in the women's slalom at the Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan, on Thursday.

Kang actually finished her race in fourth place, with the combined time of 2:32.35 after two runs, with three Japanese skiers finishing ahead of her at Sapporo Teine. But Kang moved up to bronze under the competition medal policy that prevents a podium sweep by one nation.

Emi Hasegawa won the gold in 2:21.58, with Asa Ando finishing 1.87 seconds back. Mio Arai had the third-fastest time in 2:25.49, nearly 7 seconds better than Kang but walked away empty-handed.

Kang's was South Korea's second medal in alpine skiing here, after Kim Hyeon-tae's silver in the men's giant slalom Wednesday.
