Afternoon briefing on April 25

The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on April 25 asked ministries and sectors to optimise all tools to remove difficulties facing the financial, corporate bond and real estate markets, thus pumping in more resources and promoting major growth in consumption, exports and investment.

Addressing a cabinet meeting, PM Chinh requested the State Bank of Vietnam, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Construction to effectively implement issued documents and settle legal obstacles for the three markets and supervise the implementation process. Read full story

- Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc received Honourary Consul of Vietnam in Paraguay Maria Del Carmen Perez on April 24 on the occasion of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue’s official visit to Argentina.

During the meeting, Ngoc spoke highly of the Honorary Consul’s effective support for and close coordination with the Vietnamese Embassy in Argentina in recent times, significantly contributing to maintaining and stepping up the bilateral relations in the context that Vietnam has yet to set up a representative office in Paraguay. - President of Peru Dina Boluarte spoke highly of the relationship of cooperation between Vietnam and Peru, during a recent meeting with outgoing Vietnamese Ambassador to Brazil and Peru Pham Thi Kim Hoa.

Boluarte praised the efforts and achievements made by Bitel telecommunication service provider, the Peru branch of Vietnam's military-run telecom group Viettel, in providing telecommunication services in rural and border areas of the South American nation. Read full story

- General Director of the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) Vu Viet Trang and President of the Argentine National News Agency (Telam) Bernada Llorente signed a cooperation agreement in Buenos Aires on April 24 (local time).

The signing took place following their talks the same day as part of the ongoing official visit to Argentina by Chairman of the National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue. Read full story

- So far this year, foreign direct investment (FDI) channelled into Vietnam neared 8.9 billion USD, with new capital surging after a slight decrease in the first three months.

According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment’s Foreign Investment Agency (FIA), there were 750 new projects granted investment licences worth over 4.1 billion USD, up 65.2% and 11.1% annually, respectively. Read full story

- Vietnamese seafood are being introduced at the Seafood Expo Global that is underway in Barcelona, Spain from April 25-27. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Producers and Exporters (VASEP), Vietnam has joined 20 editions of the exhibition. This year, Vietnam sends 38 fisheries firms to the event, doubling last years’ number. Read full story

- HCM City received more than 2.1 billion USD in remittances in the first quarter of the year, a surge of 19% year-on-year, according to the State Bank of Vietnam. Read full story

- A workshop spotlighting Can Tho city as an investment destination in the Mekong Delta took place at the headquarters of the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Seoul on April 24.

The event was co-organised by the KCCI, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the Vietnamese Embassy in the Republic of Korea, the Can Tho People’s Committee, and the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) Group. Read full story

- Ho Chi Minh City Health Department has asked local hospitals to stand ready to receive COVID-19 patients in necessary circumstances, amid the rising number of infections.

Along with preparing an 1,800-bed hospital for COVID-19 patients, other hospitals should be ready to resume its COVID-19 treatment units, the department underlined at a meeting on COVID-19 fight in the city on April 25. Read full story

- A seminar on building partnerships between Vietnam and the US in higher education was organised on April 25 by the US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City with the participation of representatives from more than 30 Vietnamese higher education institutions.

The event aims to help Vietnamese universities to establish educational cooperation with US institutions and to organise exchange programmes with US students. Measures that can be applied to increase the number of US students studying in Vietnam were also been discussed. Read full story

- A programme to popularise the Vietnamese culture was held in Birmingham on April 23 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United Kingdom.

The event attracted 150 students from Vietnam and other countries, as well as Vietnamese living in the locality. Read full story

- A ceremony was held in the northern mid-land province of Phu Tho on April 25 to commemorate the legendary ancestors of Vietnam, Father Lac Long Quan and Mother Au Co. Traditional rituals were carried out at the temples dedicated to the ancestral couple in the Hung Kings Temple relic site. Read full story

- Tan Thanh fishing village market in Hoi An city in the central province of Quang Nam, set up more than three years ago, has gradually become a familiar destination for domestic and foreign tourists, and is expected to be a rendezvous connecting visitors to Quang Nam. Read full story

- David Thomas, who took part in the US Army's operations in Vietnam’s Central Highlands during the war, and 21 Vietnamese artists opened an exhibition highlighting the healing power of art in Hanoi on April 24.

The exhibition, named “David Thomas and Friends”, will remain open to visitors until the end of April 29 at the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum on Nguyen Thai Hoc street. Read full story./.
