Seoul: Acting President Choi Sang-mok is anticipated to request the National Assembly to reconsider an opposition-initiated bill that seeks a special counsel investigation into impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over insurrection charges, a government official disclosed on Monday. The bill, proposed by the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), was approved during a recent parliamentary plenary session despite unanimous opposition from the ruling People Power Party lawmakers.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the finance ministry official, who chose to remain anonymous, revealed that Acting President Choi is currently evaluating how to address the special counsel probe bill. Choi had previously vetoed a similar proposal by the DP, emphasizing the necessity for a bipartisan agreement. The current bill excludes allegations that Yoon attempted to incite a conflict with North Korea, claims that were part of the earlier bill which Choi had rejected.

The ruling party continues to criticize the DP-proposed bill, labeling it as "overly broad," and has indicated plans to propose an alternative version excluding insurrection charges related to Yoon's failed martial law attempt. The recently passed bill by the opposition-led parliament is not expected to be included in the motion for the upcoming Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, as pointed out by the ministry official.

The official further stated that it remains challenging to determine whether the bill received bipartisan support. Additionally, there are ongoing discussions about the necessity of a special counsel since President Yoon is already in detention.
