Seoul: Acting President Choi Sang-mok has identified DeepSeek as a significant disruptor, predicting that the new artificial intelligence (AI) model from a Chinese startup will lead to substantial industrial shifts. Choi emphasized the transformative potential of DeepSeek during a meeting with ministers, stating that the model signifies a "fresh shock" to the established order.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Choi highlighted that the DeepSeek R1 model, developed by a Chinese company, promises high performance at a reduced cost, which could intensify global competition in the AI sector. He noted that the ripple effects of this development would likely extend to other software industries, further complicating the competitive landscape for critical national technologies.
Choi underscored the urgency for the government to devise swift countermeasures following a thorough assessment of key industrial sectors, including semiconductors, batteries, automobiles, shipping, and steel. He assured that the government is committed to providing robust and expedited support to counteract the challenges posed by the AI advancement.
In alignment with this strategy, the government plans to establish a substantial 34 trillion-won (US$23.4 billion) fund through the state-run Korea Development Bank. This fund is intended to bolster advancements in cutting-edge technologies, particularly in AI and semiconductors, to ensure the country's competitive edge in the evolving technological landscape.
