Seoul: Seven teenagers were sentenced to prison Wednesday for collectively assaulting a mentally disabled person and filming the victim being molested. The Seoul Southern District Court handed down prison terms ranging from 2 1/2 years to five years to five male and two female teenagers charged with sexual violence crimes.
According to Yonhap News Agency, all defendants were also ordered to complete a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program. Moreover, a mobile phone used to film the molestation was confiscated by the court. The incident occurred in November when the adolescents stripped the 24-year-old victim of his clothes at a park in Yeouido, Seoul, before proceeding to beat and molest him.
The teenagers reportedly committed the crime due to their displeasure with a message the victim sent to one of the female defendants. In a further act of cruelty, they burned the victim's arm with a half-smoked cigarette butt, resulting in third-degree burns and injuries that required six weeks of recovery.
The court emphasized that stern punishment was inevitable, citing that the defendants' actions amounted to abuse or torture. The sentences reflect the severity of the crimes committed and aim to deliver justice to the victim while serving as a deterrent for future offenses.
